The Modern Literary Era Shift From Romanticism Into...

The modern literary era shifted from romanticism into realism in the early 20th century. Realism in literature stripped away romantic notion in favor of a more representative style. This new literature was descriptive and colorful while describing on occasion, terrible events from experiences born out of World War One. Many of these writers were considered part of the Lost Generation and their literary themes expressed the feelings of their time. A smaller subset of these writers took their literary talents in a completely different direction and created fantastical worlds to escape in to. Tolkien described the war as the collapse of all my world (Lee), and wrote that by 1918 all but one of my close fr iends were dead (Lee). Tolkien was spared from the rest of the war by a louse bite that gave him trench fever. He spent the rest of the war in and out of the hospital, on convalescence leaves of absence, and help trained fresh troops in Staffordshire and Yorkshire. It was during this time he began to conceptualize his world of Middle Earth. The utter helplessness of the soldier on the Western Front, mutilated, gassed, and bayoneted without sympathy was a recurring postwar theme. Tolkien translated his experiences in a different direction from his contemporaries. His was writing was no less descriptive but the setting was vastly different. He created a world called Middle Earth and took us on the ultimate adventure of good vs evil. Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937 and drew much of its inspiration from his experiences on the Western Front. At the heart of his story are the everyman hobbits, and particularly the reluctant heroes Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. Much like the citizen soldiers of the world wars, they are asked to serve a higher cause and defend the place they love.
